How many episodes in The Flash season 5?

The Flash season five will have 22 episodes – one less than the previous four seasons which have each had 23 instalments.

The first episode of The Flash season five airs Tuesday, October 9 on The CW at 8pm/7pm central in the US and Thursday, October 18 at 8pm on Sky One in the UK.

As with previous seasons, the fifth run is expected to be split into two halves, with the first 11 episodes airing in 2018 and the remaining 11 airing in early 2019.

The CW has revealed some of the episode titles. They are:

  • Episode 1: Nora
  • Episode 2: Blocked
  • Episode 3: The Death of Vibe
  • Episode 4: News Flash

We will update this article as further episode titles are released.

What will happen in The Flash season five?

As the title of episode one suggests, the new season of The Flash will see the return of Nora Allen (played by Jessica Parker Kennedy), AKA XS, the future daughter of Barry Allen (Grant Gustin) and Iris West-Allen (Candice Patton).

She previously starred in the Arrowverse crossover story Crisis on Earth-X, and then reappeared during the season four finale to tell her parents she had made, “a big, big mistake.”

As well as revealing what this will be, The Flash season five will also introduce new supervillain Cicada (Chris Klein).

Cicada is the superhero name of David Hersch, who will be introduced in episode two of the series.

In a CW character breakdown, he is described as a “semi-immortal metahuman who has the ability to disable other metahumans’ abilities and blames other super-powered individuals for his suffering.”

He can also shoot lightning daggers, as was revealed stills from episode two where he is shown threatening Vibe (Carlos Valdes) with one.

Flash showrunner Todd Helbing has also said that this season will move away from single series arcs.

He told The Hollywood Reporter: “One of the pitfalls that we ran into is that it’s hard in 23 episodes to have one storyline play out.

“So this year, while there is certainly a spine, we have two or three major stories that go on in different increments.”

He then said the new season would have a three act structure.

He added: “That’s been helpful in a lot of ways. We learned a lot when Barry was in prison – it was only three episodes but it really opened our eyes.”

The Flash season 5 starts Friday, October 18 at 8pm on Sky One
