Rachel Esther Riegelhaupt Mehlsak and Scott Andrew Bender are to be married June 24 at Broadturn Farm in Scarborough, Me. Rabbi Paul F. Cohen is to officiate, with assistance from the bride’s sister, Alison B.R. Mehlsak.
Ms. Mehlsak, 34, who works from Utrecht, the Netherlands, is the legal and fund administration director at Aqua-Spark, an investment fund based there. The firm focuses on promoting sustainability in aquaculture as a means of addressing global food security, taking pressure off the oceans, and creating positive social and environmental impact. She graduated magna cum laude from Brown and received a law degree from Harvard.
She is a daughter of Barbara F. Riegelhaupt and Mo J. Mehlsak of South Portland, Me. The bride’s father is the executive editor of The Forecaster, a group of weekly newspapers, based in Falmouth, Me., covering the Greater Portland, Maine area. Her mother is a career law clerk to Judge Kermit V. Lipez of the United States Court of Appeals for the First Circuit in Portland.
Dr. Bender, 33, is a postdoctoral researcher in physics at the Institute for Theoretical Physics at Utrecht University, where his research focuses on spintronics, the study of electron spin. He graduated magna cum laude from Santa Clara University and received a Ph.D. in physics from the University of California, Los Angeles.
He is the son of Judy R. Bender and Dr. Bruce G. Bender of Centennial, Colo. The groom’s father is a pediatric neuropsychologist and professor of pediatrics at National Jewish Health, a hospital in Denver. His mother retired as a school psychologist in the Denver Public Schools.
The couple met on OkCupid in December 2014 when both were living in Los Angeles.
