Fans were overjoyed when the loveable Dwight (played by Luke Norris) finally appeared to get his happy ending with former socialite Caroline (Gabriella Wilde) on Poldark.
Seemingly a perfect match at first, Dwight and Caroline’s peace didn’t last for long as the doctor suffered a severe bout of post traumatic stress disorder following his capture in France.
This season saw the pair’s luck come in once more when it was revealed Caroline was pregnant with their child on the BBC series.
Delighted, Dwight was all-too-aware of his wife’s aversion to babies and children but the pair seemed set to muddle through their next adventure.
Fast-forward nine months on the show, and tonight’s episode saw Caroline give birth to a healthy beautiful baby girl called Sarah.
But while Caroline struggled to show any maternal instinct towards her daughter, there was another spanner in the works to come on the historical drama.
Leaving her baby to sleep, Caroline concentrated on getting ready for the Warleggans’ lavish party that evening.
Joking with her adorable dog Horace, she commanded him to watch out for baby Sarah and make sure the tot continued to sleep.
But as the camera swooped over the little girl, it was clear something wasn’t quite right and Dwight later discovered that too.
Coming in to see his wife and child, Dwight joked Horace was feeling left out now the newborn had arrived.
“Whilst Sarah and I are quite aware of our own unimportance,” he continued, to his wife’s bemusement.
But Dwight had noticed something very concerning about the infant, and held her closely for inspection.
The doctor then proceeded to hold the bundle of joy up to the light as if he’d spotted something on the child’s skin.
Completely unaware of his worry, Caroline called out: “You seem very attached to that child Dr Enys I hope she won’t grow up to be a spoilt brat.”
Barely aware of his wife’s comments, Dwight replied but was still staring intently.
Could this mean the Enys family are set for an awful tragedy in the next episode?
Ross (Aidan Turner) and Demelza Poldark (Eleanor Tomlinson) have already experienced their own terrible fate with daughter Julia, who caught a fatal case of the putrid throat.
If Sarah Caroline Enys is set to suffer from the same ailment, would Dwight have spotted it simply by looking at the baby? Or could he have seen the beginnings of a red rash possibly leading to dengue fever or measles?
In the trailer for next week’s episode, Dwight and Caroline seem to be at risk of breaking up, in a shocking admission from the new mother.
“I want to leave you,” a cold Caroline declares, as a heartbroken Dwight replies: “You cannot wish that.”
Poldark continues Sundays at 9pm on BBC One.
