Michael Waterson, Zachary Nyein – The New York Times

Michael Jason Waterson and the Rev. Zachary Charles Nyein were married June 23 at Grace Episcopal Church in Chattanooga, Tenn. The Rev. John A. Tirro, a minister of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, officiated, with the Rev. Dr. Bonnie Scott, a United Church of Christ minister, taking part.

Dr. Waterson (left), 31, is an assistant professor of life sciences at Chattanooga State Community College. He graduated from Washington University in St. Louis and received a doctoral degree in cellular and molecular biology from the University of Michigan.

He is a son of Carolyn Putney Waterson and Gary D. Waterson of Benzonia, Mich. Dr. Waterson’s mother was the school nurse for the Benzie County Central Schools, which has its headquarters in Benzonia. His father retired as a science teacher at Benzie Central High School, also in Benzonia.

Father Nyein, 29, is an Episcopal priest and serves as the associate rector of Grace Church. He graduated from the University of Tennessee and received a Master of Divinity from Yale. He is the son of Cathy Coatney Rhodes of Alcoa, Tenn., and Dr. Tun Kyaw Nyein of Chiang Mai, Thailand. Father Nyein’s mother retired as an English teacher at Heritage High School in Maryville, Tenn. His father retired as the dean of the Center for Adult Learning and Continuing Education at Misericordia University in Dallas, Pa.

The couple met in September 2015 at an L.G.B.T.Q. graduate student mixer at Yale.
