Coronation Street fans will witness Phelan’s dramatic return to the soap this month for his final showdown.
The villain (played by Connor McIntyre) is set to return to the cobbles, after laying low since his wife Eileen Grimshaw (Sue Cleaver) discovered he is a murderer.
But despite his absence, his evil run isn’t over just yet as he’s been keeping a close eye on those he feels have wronged him, ready for revenge.
As Gary Windass (Mikey North) tracks Phelan down to a campsite in Wales, he drags him back to the street and Phelan’s pent-up fury is unleashed.
Speaking to TV Times actor Connor spoke about his character’s storyline development and what fans can expect from the upcoming potential killing spree.
“I’m not sure the idea of Phelan becoming a serial killer was even mentioned in the early days, but the character’s been built up over the years,” he told TV Times.
“Initially viewers thought ‘He’s wrong in many ways, but even he is not capable of murder.‘
“But then we caught a glimpse of what he would become as he walked away from a dying Michael Rodwell (Les Dennis).”
Phelan left the Stree in 2014 after raping Anna Windass (Debbie Rush) and fled to Dubai.
Connor had no idea that his character would be back, noting: “Everything was rounded up nicely, so I assumed that was the last we’d seen of him. But viewers wanted him to get what he deserved.”
Just as it looks like Phelan will be brought to justice when he returns, the news that daughter Nicola Rubinstein (Nicola Thorp) has had her baby, turns his world upside down.
“This is Phelan at his most terrifying, he knows the game is up, but all he can think about is seeing his grandson,” Connor said.
“He’s walking down the middle of the Street with a gun in his hand, and woe betide anyone who gets in his way. There’s nothing more dangerous than Pat Pehlan with nothing to lose!” Connor added.
A trailer for the upcoming storyline has already been released and fans saw the residents reel in shock and horror as they realised Phelan has been watching their every move.
The Executive Creative Director of ITV Creative spoke out about the terrifying trailer: “Pat Phelan, Coronation Street’s greatest villain of all time, deserved an equally villainous promotional spot to alert the audience of his return to the stree
“We wanted to take the iconic street and show it as it’s never been shown before, dripping with claustrophobically foreboding atmosphere.
“We place Pat Pehlan at the heart of the promo, appearing impossibly around every corner of the street for five unsuspecting characters, Nicola, Seb, Eileen, Gary and Sarah.”
As well as Phelan’s vengeful return and the potential killing of several characters, Michelle prepares to marry Robert and David fights to take control of his life after his rape ordeal.
Previous spoilers have revealed that Michelle could become evil Phelan’s fifth victim when he shoots her on her wedding day.
Her husband-to-be Robert Preston (Tristan Gemmill), will desperately try to save her, but will she make it?
Coronation Street continues Wednesday on ITV at 7.30pm.
