Aidan Connor’s (Shayne Ward) suicide shattered the Connor family, but grief stricken father Johnny (Richard Hawley) has taken the loss particularly hard.
As the father-of-two prepares to bury his only son in an upcoming episode of Coronation Street, his relationship with wife Jenny (Sally Ann Matthews) will take a turn for the worst.
The couple have been butting head’s since Aidan’s tragic passing and it would seem their marriage is hanging by a piece of thread.
Speaking about Johnny and Jenny’s relationship, actor Richard said: “Johnny is finding difficulty with grieving and of course he is deeply traumatised. He’s acting out the silence that Aidan lived in.
“Johnny is blinded to everything, he is keeping other people out, not deliberately but he can’t stop it.
“This is the danger of the difficulty of grieving. It’s an instinctive response to protect his own pain and vulnerability and it’s a classic case of you lash out at the ones closest to you.”
In a previous instalment of the ITV soap, Johnny told Jenny she was not welcome at the Chapel of Rest after she accidentally spilt coffee on Aidan’s suit.
It is this unintentional, but unforgivable act that escalates the tension between the pair and drives them further apart.
“The trigger for banning Jenny is because she spills a coffee on Aidan’s suit which is almost like desecrating his son,” Richard explained.
“He sees innocent mistakes as desecration because all of his feelings are elevated, you just can’t reach him.”
Could it be Jenny’s clumsiness that draws Johnny to Liz McDonald? Or is he just seeking comfort from an outsider?
“Liz is an old friend and she has always been someone who he can talk with,” Richard offered.
“She has good wisdom but that is confused now, without him knowing it, because she has actually developed strong feelings for him.”
But their close relationship could lead to heartache for either Liz (Beverley Callard) or his wife Jenny as the pair shared a kiss.
Hinting that it could be Jenny who has her heart broken, he said of Johnny and Liz’s kiss: “He is able to express himself with her.
“Somehow all the currents come together and they find a sense of warmth, intimacy and a gentle nurturing in a way that he and his heart needs.”
With Johnny still grieving for his son, will he continue to seek comfort in Liz and embark on a full on affair? Or could he make his marriage work with Jenny?
